###"The many uses of Iodine.' : 탈모, 갑상선종, 섬유성유방/난소낭종, 유방암, 전립선비대증, 대사저하 --- 마시는 용량은 보통 하루 SSKI나 루골액 6드롭 정도를 물1/2-1글라스에 타서 복용.
1. 멸균Germicide: Elemental iodine은 독성이 매우 낮은 강력한 멸균제로서 50 ppm용액 (eg, 50 mg/L)이면 1분내에 세균을 박멸하고 15분이면 세균포자까지 잡는다. 국소적으로도 Iodine은 발톱무좀, 백선(피부무좀균), 열성수포, 피부흑반, 피부늘어짐, 피부사마귀/성병사마귀, 조갑주위피부비후에 탁효 : 면봉에 몇 방울을 묻혀서 병변이 사라질 때까지 매일 발라준다.
2. 수질 정화 : Iodine은 1세기 넘게 수질정화에 사용되어 왔다. 편리성과 효과, 물맛 면에서도 염소소독보다 월등하다. 6개월이상의 안전선에는 의문이 있지만 단기간 및 3-6개월 정도의 중기적 측면의 안전성을 보장된다. iodine알레르기, 활동성갑상선질환자, 임신부는 오래 쓰면 안된다.
3. 방사선 피폭 Radioactive Fallout : 방사선피폭시 인체세포가 방사선에 노출되는 것을 막을 수 있는 의료수단은 없다. 하지만 a salt of the elements potassium and iodine를 경구로든 호흡기로든 방사선에 노출되기 30분에서 1시간 사이에 아주 소량이라도 경구복용하면, 갑상선이 파괴되는 것을 적어도 99% 막을 수 있다. 갑상선은 비방사성, 방사성 iodine모두를 흡수하며, 정상상태에서는 두가지 형태로든 아니면 한가지 형태로 갑상선내에 포화상태로 보존한다.
보통때에는, 비방사성요딘은 방사성요딘이 유입되기전에는 먼저 혈액으로부터 갑상선에 흡수되어 쓰이는데, 대다수는 흡수되어 포화상태로 갑상선내에 남아있게되고, 일단 비방사성요딘이 포화상태로 갑상선을 채우게 되면 추가로 더 갑상선내로 흡수되어 들어 올 수 있는 양은 1%정도 한도가 된다. ( 이 양이 혈액중에 있는 방사성요딘으로 갑상선에 채워질 수있는 양이 된다) 즉, 인체에 해로운 방사성요딘의 갑상선내로의 흡수가 차단될 수 있는 것이다. (혈액내의 과다한 요딘 분량은 마침내 신장에 의해 제거됨)
4. 섬유성 유방낭종 Fibrocystic Breasts: 1970년 Dr. John Myers 는 아무리 심한 유방의 섬유성낭종이라 해도 요딘에 의해 치료됨을 확인하였다. 경증-중등도의 경우에서는 매일 6-8드롭의 SSKI또는 루골액에 몇 온스(1온스는 30CC, 약 120CC 정도는 물1/2글라스)의 물을 섞어서 마시면 3-6개월 내에 거의 소멸됨을 보고하였다.
5. 헤르페스바이러스 Herpes virus: 실상을 말한다면 단순헤르페스바이러스를 박멸할 수 있는 화학제들이 여럿 있다. 요딘은 국소적으로 매우 흔하게 쓰이는 항바이러스, 항균, 항진균제이다. Povidine Iodine (Betadine iodine)같은 수용성 복합제는 헤르페스바이러스를 죽이기 위해 "zinc gluconate" wash와 섞어 사용한다. Tincture of iodine도 사용되지만 알콜성분 때문에 따갑게 느낄 수 있다. 요딘은 피부와 옷에 묻을 수 있다. 또 피부를 통해 흡수되면 활성을 띄게 된다. 요딘색깔의 zinc gluconate wash 는 매우 활기차게 만든다. 피부를 통해 흡수된 요딘의 제거속도는 사람마다 차이가 있다.
7. 신생아안질환예방Ophthalmia neonatorum prevention. : 생후1개월내에 생기는 세균성안염 , 임균, 클라미디아균등이 주 원인. erythromycin, silver nitrate, gentamicin, and Povidone-iodine. Tetracycline and penicillin drops등으로도 예방 가능. 산업화된 나라에서는 문제가 안되지만 아프리카등 빈국에서는 실명의 20-30%의 원인으로 대두되고 있다. 2.5%Povidone-iodine ophthalmic solution은 저렴하면서도 광범한 항균범위를 가지고 있으므로 추천된다.
8. 전염성연속종 Molluscum contagiosum: Iodine이 잘 듣는다.
9. 난소낭종 Ovarian cysts: 에스트로겐우세와 연관된 유방과 난소의 낭종을 SSKI는 동시에 없앤다. (그 점에서 요딘의 다른제제형태인 "Lugol's solution" and "di-atomic iodine"도 동일한 효과를 보인다.). 이 요딘은 estrone (a slightly carcinogenic human estrogen)과 16-alpha-hydroxyestrone (훨씬 유해한 에스트로겐대사산물)을 estriol로 바꾸는데, 이 estriol은 "anti-carcinogenic" 이거나 아무리 나쁘게 말하더라도 사람에스트로겐의 "neutral" form이라 할 수 있다.
10. 두퓌트렌 구축 , 페이로니병Dupuytren's contracture and Peyronie's disease : 섬유성병변이 특징으로, SSKI or Lugol's solution이 도움된다.
Dupuytren's contracture은 수장부 건을 따라 섬유화가 진행되는 것으로서손가락을 손바닥쪽으로 끌어당겨내리므로 진행됨에 따라서 손가락을 곧게 펼 수 없게 된다.
Peyronie's disease는 음경축을 따라서 섬유화가 진행되는 것으로, 발기시에 곡선화되고 통증이 생긴다. 위의 모든 경우에서 하루 두번 SSKI를 딱딱해진 부위에 문질러주면 수개월 걸리기는 하지만 마침내 정상으로 돌아 온다. (이 때 부가적으로para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) 2 grams 하루3회 경구복용, and to rub a mixture of Vitamin E/DMSO혼합물을 병변부위에 발라문지르기를 더불어 하면 도움된다) 빠른 시기에 치료한다면 SSKI만으로도 족하다.
11. 켈로이드 Keloids : 비정상적으로 비후된 반흔조직. 대개 손상입은 부위에 발생, 1인치까지도 길어질 수 있다. 흑인에 더 흔한 경향. SSKI로 최소 하루 두번 도포하고 문질러주면 결국 납작한 정상반흔조직으로 복귀된다. 때로 수개월-1년정도 걸릴 수도 있다. DMSO와 SSKI를 혼합하여 문질러주면 더 치유가 빠르다.
12. 누공 Fistulas : 조직 밑으로 생긴 비정상적인 터널, 치유가 잘 안됨. 대개 만성염증으로 인한 것. 흔히 보는 것은 항문주위누공(항문외측-직장내부 사이의 연결), 직장-질 누공이다. 수술적치료로 성공적으로 수복되기도 하지만 SSKI를 면봉에 묻혀서 하루에 여러번 내외로 발라주면 흔히 잘 낫기도 한다. DMSO와 함께 사용시 더 빨리 낫는다.
13. 치핵 Hemorrhoids.
Richard Kunin, M.D. of San Francisco에 의하면 SSKI 20드롭과 Flax oil 30CC를 섞어서 침대에서 치핵에 문질러주면 문자그대로 한밤이 지나면 다 나아버리기도 한다. SSKI만 단독으로 쓸 수도 있는데, 이 때는 치핵에 닿을 때 찌르는듯한 통증이 나타나는 것은 어쩔 수 없다.,
14. 동맥경화증 Arteriosclerosis.
30년이상에 걸쳐서 안과의사 두사람이 개발한 "Iodo-niacin" 정제(iodide 120 milligrams, niacin 15 milligrams)로 수개월간 사용시 동맥의 동맥경화성 폐색잉 실제로 역전됨을 치료전후의 망막사진퐐영을 통해 입증했다. 공식적으로 인정받은 그 사진상에서는 콜레스테롤로 인해 폐색된 동맥이 완연한 경감을 볼 수 있었다. 변법으로서 SSKI나 루골 1-2드롭과 나이아신함유 비타민B군(추가로 필수지방산이나 어유를)을 함께 복용하면 상당한 호전을 보게 되는데, 이 때 갑상선기능검사 추적이 필요하다.!!!
15. 피지성 낭종 Sebaceous cysts : 기름기가 있는 지방물질이 들어 있는 낭종. 얼굴, 사타구니, 음순에 갑자기 나타나기도 한다. SSKI와 DMSO를 50:50으로 섞어서 문질러 주면1-2주내에 사라져 버린다. (iodide에 의해 낭종내 오일, 왁스콜레스테롤, 지방질이 녹아서 수용성이 되고 조직으로 흡수되어 사라져 버리기 때문) 이 치료기전은 지방종 때에도 그대로 적용된다.
16. 침샘내 결석 Sialoliths, parotid duct stone.
타액선(이하선, 악하선)내 결석은 SSKI 3-4드롭을 물에 타서 복용하면 4-8개월 사이에 보통 녹아 없어져 버린다.
17. 만성기관지염, 폐기종 Chronic bronchitis and emphysema ("COPD").
Lugol's은 무한한 가치를 지닌 약제이다. 체내로 들어가면 쉽게 2차감염을 일으킬 수 있고 딱딱하게 들러붙어 있어서 뱉어내기 어려운 기관지 점액을 녹여 제거가 쉽게 한다. 고래로부터 유명한 점액용해제이다. COPD정도에 따라 3-6드롭을 물에 타서 하루한번 복용한다. 무한정 사용할 수 있으나 갑상선기능을 자주 모니터링해야 한다.
18. 손톱-발톱주위 감염 Infected hangnails
하루 여러번 발라문질러주면 쉽게 낫는다. 수일 걸린다. 헤르페스-감기도 잘 나으나 좀더 오래 걸린다.
19. 편도비대 Enlarged tonsils.
인후와 사타구니부위의 임파선종대는 먼저 의사에게 보여라. 드물게 고령자에게서 백혈병, 임파종, 기타 암으로 판명나기도 한다. 그게 아니라면 SSKI + DMSO로 치료하라 대부분의 경우 점차적으로 결국 완치된다.
20. 조갑진균증 Onychomycosis.
발톱밑 진균감염은 치료가 때로 매우 어렵다. 주류의학적 항진균제는 수개월 걸리고 주기적인 간기능검사가 꼭 필요하게 된다. Lugol's or Tincture of Iodine + DMSO를 발라 문질러주라. 감염부위의 발톱밑은 빨리 반응하지 않는 것처럼 보여도 매우 효과적이며, 훨씬 매우 안전하다.
21. 질감염 Vaginal infections.
20 to 30 drops을 물에 타서 하루 한번 5-10일 간 좌욕을 시행하라 수일 내에 사라져 버린다.
22. 방광감염 Bladder Infections.
물 한글라스에 루골액 1-2드롭을 타서 하루4번 복용. 4시간 정도면 신장을 거쳐서 배출되므로 방광염이 심하면 4시간 간격으로 시행, 항생제보다 훨씬 더 효과적이면서 재발이 없다.
23. 갑상선저하증 Hypothyroidism.
대개 물에 타서 복용하는 양은 하루1드롭이면 족하다. 반드시 갑상선기능검사가 필요하다.
24. 채식후 가스 Vegan gas.
콩함유음식 먹은후 장내가스. 대개 콩으로 인한 것으로서, 콩내에 장내의 전분분해효소를 억제하는 성분때문이다. 루골은 이 억제성분을 차단한다. 콩을 조리하기전에콩을 불릴 때, 먼저 루골액 1-2드롭을 넣고서 1시간이상 콩을 물에 불리면 예방 가능하다. 조리전에 그 물은 버리고 새 물로 조리하라.
25. 대머리/탈모 Baldness
: 멕시코에서는 요딘을 대머리예방용으로 사용한다. 대개 샴푸 후 린스 때 사용한다. 부분대머리의 경우에도 적용하는데, 빈약모가 있는 곳에 발라서 두드려주면 일시적으로 두피딱지가 생기고 그후 딱지 밑에서부터 새로운 머리털이 자라난다. 약 3개월이 걸린다고 한다.
26. 중금속제거 Heavy Metal Detox.
미네랄과 함께 투여한 Lugol's containing 12.5 mg elemental iodine의 생물학적유용성검사 결과 요딘은 수은, 납, 카드뮴 소변배출을 하루만에 수배나 더 증가시켰다. 알루미늄배출의 증가는 1개월 이상 걸렸다. orthoiodosupplementation의 중금속물질 디톡스에 대한 예비능은 알루미늄, 수은, 납, 카드뮴에 대해 확실히 입증되었다. 27. 피부의 전암병소 Precancerous skin lesions
: Lugol용액을 반복적으로 피부에 발라주면 최저층으로부터 피부재생이 유발되므로 오래된 피부는 피부탈락이 촉진된다. 이는 하지궤양에 스프레이 형태로 하루 두번 뿌려 사용했을 때 치유조직이 빠르게 올라오는 것을 보아 알 수 있다. 전암이 의심스러운 곳에서도 새로이 올라오는 피부는 전암병변을 탈락시켜버린다. 수술창도 치유가 빨라진다. 특히 갑상선저하인경우에는 더 철저히 피부병소를 루골로 치료해주라. 비타민E와 함께 사용하는 것도 도움된다.
28. 칼에 베인 상처 , 딱지 Cuts and scabs.
요딘(루골과 같은)은 피부질환치료에 있어서 매우 중요한역할을 담당한다. 치료효과를 따라서 역으로 생각해 보면 피부질환의 대다수는 실제로 상대적인 요드결핍과 직간접으로 연관되어 있는 것 같다. 그중에서도 가장 현저한 병소는 수술후 나타나는 켈로이드성 수술반흔일 것이다. 요딘의 섭취와 조직에서의 농도가 충분하다면(일본에서처럼) 켈로이드형성은 거의 일어나지 않게 된다. 게다가 요딘의 세포자살능촉진은 전암병변과 많은 종류의 암들을 치료하는 효능을 가져다 준다. 이 때 병소부위는 건강한세포로 바뀐다.
우리의 전세대에 살던 이들은 요드팅쳐를 새로 난 상처에다 발라서 감염을 막았다. 이 행위는 딱지가 생겨 떨어질 때까지 계속함으로써 감염방지 차원에서 결과적으로 볼때 매우 효과적이라고 말할 수 있다. 요딘을 딱지에 발라주면 조직의 치유가 훨씬 빨라진다. 이것은 침범된 깊이와 무관하게 화상의 경우에 있어서도 마찬가지이며, 화상의 생리는 갑상선호르몬의 급성적 결여로 인한 것일 가능성을 보여준다.
29. 감기 Common cold.
인후의 껄끄러운 느낌, 콧소리가 나타나면 먼저 루골용액을 열어서 코로 한번 흡입해보라.(요딘알레르기가 없으면서 천식이 없는 사람의 경우) Rhinovirus 감염이 본격적으로 시작되기전에 재빨리 소실되는 것을 알고는 깜짝 놀라게 되리라.
30. 유방암 Breast Cancer:
유방암에 대한 광범위한 역학조사결과, R.A. Wiseman은 유방암의 92-96%는 단발성이며, 대부분의 경우에 있어서 한가지 공통점을 확인할 수 있었는데, 그것은 고지방식단으로 인해 야기된 micronutrient의 결핍이었다. 이것을 공급해주었을 때 유방암발생빈도는 줄어들었고 그 유방암에 대한 보호인자로 지목된 것은 elemental iodine이었다. 일본과 아이슬란드에서 인구역학조사 결과 그 두 나라의 공통점은 해조류를 통해 요딘을 상대적으로 많이 섭취하고 있어서 단순갑상선종과 유방암의 발생이 저하되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 반면에 멕시코와 태국의 경우, 완전히 반대였는데, 역으로 단순갑상선종과 유방암 발생율이 매우 높았다.

: 피부염치료의 대강 === 피부염 있는 얼굴에는 무색의 요딘을 바르고 두드려준다, 얼굴병변이 아니면 보통의 요딘을 사용, 하지만 수시간동안 착색상태에 있게 된다는 것을 주지하라. 피부민감도가 강한 사람들은 접촉피부염을 일으킬 수도 있다(T-존) 바른 후 10초 정도면 마르는데, 마르는 동안 요딘냄새를 맡지 않도록 하라. 다 마르고나면 비타민E오일을 깨트려서 덧발라주라. 한 캡슐을 깨뜨리면 수일간은 쓸 수 있는데, 요딘에 의해 붉어진 부위가 비타민E오일에 의해 완화되며 피부가 얇게 벗겨져 탈락되는 것을 막아준다. 그 부위는 가능한한 비타민E 오일을 발라주어 종일밤낮 촉촉하게 습기를 유지하라, 요딘 국소도포는 2일간 하루3번 시행하라, 2일이 지나면 하루 1번으로 줄여서 3일간 지속한다. 비타민E오일은 하루종일 바르고 있어도 좋다. 하루한번 3일이 지나면 그 후엔 EOD로 10일간 시행한다. 피부염이 완전히 사라질 때까지 비타민E오일은 매일 유지하라. 피부염치료를 위해 요딘과 비타민 E오일을 사용한다면 보통 24시간이면 효과가 나타나기 시작한다. 처음엔 피부가 붉게 변하고 염증기가 더 하는 듯 느껴지겠지만 염려말라, 비타민E오일이 치유과정을 촉진시켜줄 것이다.
:원형탈모 - 두피에갑자기 생기는 탈모부위, 1-2주간 매일 1회 병소부위에 요딘을 바르고 두드려줌. 붉고 가려웠던 두피가 변하여 건강한 정상두피가 되고 6-8주면 가는 새로운 모발이 올라오기 시작한다. 더불어 피로감이 사라지게 된다.

: 만성질염 -- 포비돈 요딘, 1리터의 온수에 밥수저2개분량을 섞어서 좌욕으로효과
: 보통 요딘은 결핍이 의심되면 주 1-2회 정도에서부터 시작한다. 사용필요를 느낄 때마다 시행한다. 해조류에는 브로마이드와 요딘이 함께 들어있어서 균형되게 작용하므로 많이 섭취해도 요딘과용의 염려는 전혀 없다. 요딘이 너무 많으면 브로마이드는 요딘을 밖으로 내보내어 버린다. 요딘의 생물학적유용성을 높이는데 브로마이드가 필요하지만 빵처럼, 브로마이드가 더 많이 들어 있게되면 요딘이 또한 빠져나가게되어버린다.

요딘은 모든 식단에 함유되어 있지만 가장결핍되기 쉬운 성분. 요딘의 염류를 요드라 하며 식단의 요딘은 요드로 섭취된다. 미국인의 99%는 요드섭취량이 부족하다. 조상들이 살던 시대와 식단(요딘이 100배나 풍부한 해양에 인접해 살고 거기에서 요드를 충분히 섭취, -환경이 많이 달라졌기 때문이다. 하루에 필요로하는 섭취량은 6-14mg, 여성은 12mg정도이고 이 정도양으로 보충을 시작하면 과량복용증상을 거의 나타내지 않는다.
하지만, 비정상적인 질병상태에 있는 사람(5-10%)에게는 하루1mg도 처음 시작하는 양으로서는 때로 너무 고용량일 수 있다. 바로 여기에 속하는 중등도이상의 심각한 갑상선저하나 당뇨병성신경병증을 앓고 있는 수백만의 미국인들은 훨씬 더 많은 요드를 사용하는데 익숙해지기 위해서는 수개월-수년정도의 적응기간이 필요하다. 왜냐하면 죽어가는 말초신경들은 보다 더 적합한 용량의 요드와 세포대사 조건이 수개월-수년동안 충족되어야만 재생이 시작되기 때문이다. 이런경우, 비정상적인 신경세포들은 정상적으로 기능을 못하고 오히려 강한 소양증, 감각둔마, 작열통 및 환상지통증감각자극을 뇌로 보내게 되고, 이 감각들을 줄여주기 위해서는 하루1/2mg정도에서부터 시작하는 것이 더 편안하게 느껴지기도 한다. 이것은 현재 미국인들이 섭취하고 있는 용량의 3-4배 가량정도되는 양인데, 이 용량도 말초신경 소양증이나 통증문제를지나치게 악화시키지 않기 위해 쓰는 양보더 훤씬 적은 양이다.
하루 1/2mg 복용은 대사속도를 뚜렷하게 올려준다. 대사속도가 느린 많은 성인들에게서 보통 일시적으로(수주간) 맥박이 빨라질 것이다. 방금 언급한대로 오래된 갑상선저하가 있거나 2형 당뇨병이 있는 사람들은 갑자기 월래 있던 손-발-팔-다리의 소양감이 증가하는 것을 경험할 수 있다. 이 증상은 보통 당뇨병성신경염으로 불리지만 실은 엄격히 말하자면 당뇨병보다는 갑상선저하 때문이다. 요드를 주면 대사속도가 증가되고 신경세포의 대사가 더 정상에 가까워지기 때문에 신경증상이 더 강화되는 것이다. 대사가 느린상태로부터 정상화되면 될 수록 손상받고, 빈사상태에 있던 신경세포들은 재생이 시작된다. 재생이 활발하게 일어나는 수개월-수년동안에 걸쳐서 신경증상 자체는 더 악화된 상태로 있을 수도 있지만 나중에 가서는 결국 점점 줄어들게 되고 마침내 사라져버린다. 불행히도 손상된 신경이 많고 오래될 수록 말초신경증상은 더 심하고 더 회복기간이 오래 갈 수도 있다. *** 말초신경통과 관련하여 체크해야 할 것들- 중금속디톡스, 철분결핍, 갑상선저하(요딘결핍), 비타민B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, 비타민ADE, DHEA-EFA 결핍 : UVB-EDTA, fursultamine, Meyer;s Cocktail 시행
여성들은 유방에 요딘이 축적되어야 하기 때문에 더 많은 요딘이 필요하다. 요딘은 물과 지방에 다 녹으며 요드보다 체단백과 또한 쉽게 결합한다. 수유부의 경우 유방내 지방량이 많기 때문에 그만큼 더 많이 유방내에 축적된다. 젖먹이는 물에 녹아 있는 성분보다는 오히려 젖의 지방에 녹아 있는 요드와 요딘을 더 믾이 섭취하게 된다.
요딘은 2중으로 된 세포막의 수분-지질층을 쉽게 통과하여 마침내 혈액을 거쳐서 신장에서 요드보다 약 5-10배 정도 더 빨리 소실된다. 젖을 먹이든 그렇지 않든 여성의 유방조직의 지방은 하루 약6mg까지의 요드를 필요로 한다. 젖으로 나가지 않으면 유방에서 요드와 요딘은 혈액내로 분산되어 나와서 소변으로 그만큼 더 많이 소실된다. 이것이 아브라함이 여성에게 필요한 요드의 양은 약14mg이라 한 이유이다. 남자는 보통 8mg정도이다. 불행히도 미국의 남녀들은 평균적으로 하루140mcg을 복용하고 있는데, 건강을 위해 남성에서는 필요한 용량의 1/57이고, 여성에서는 1/100 정도의 양이다.
요드를 복요하고있는 청년여성에게서는 또 한가지가 있는데, 생리 주기를 정상화시키는 기능이 있다는 것이다.

바다생선은 고용량요딘을 함유하는데 (up to 2.5 mg/kg), 어패류는 (up to 1.6 mg/kg), 소금은 (up to 1.4 mg/kg)정도 함유하고 있다. 시리얼에 함유되어 있는 함량은 토양안에 녹아 있는 양에 따라 다르다. .food colour erythrosine에는 요딘이 풍부하다. 영국에서는 우유에서도 볼 수 있다.(average level 0.15 mg/kg), 아마도 supplemented cattle feeds and iodophors <유두소독제> 사용으로 인한 것으로 보인다. 신선한 육류의 요딘양은 조리시 감소하며 요드형태로서의 요딘은 복합미네랄제에 들어 있다.(providing up to 0.49 mg iodine/day) 또한 다시마보충제에 들어있다. 그리고 주류의학에서 사용하는 약제, 소독제, 방사선조영제에도 함유되어 있다.
요딘은 체중감량, 류마티즘- 궤양- 탈모 치료, 동맥-신경조직-조갑건강유지에 도움을 준다.
요딘이 낮을 때 이를 보상하는 기전들
-- 이들 기전중에서 갑상선종대의 경우, 갑상선저하증(점액수종)이 발현되지 않을 때에만 갑상선종대가 발생한다. 갑상선저하증상에는 lethargy, weakness, weight gain, poor concentration, oedema, myalgia, dry skin, delayed tendon reflexes and slow heart rate등이 있다. 임신 때 갑상선저하는 유산, 사산, 선천성기형의 위험성을 증가시킨다. 선천성갑상선저하증으로 인한 난장이(Cretinism)는 태아발달과정에서 요딘결핍으로 나타난 것으로 mental retardation, deaf mutism, and spastic diplegia의 증세들을 나타낸다. 발생율은 좀 낮지만 less common form of cretinism으로서 myxoedematous type이 있는데 그 임상적 특징은 hypothyroidism and dwarfism이다.
요딘은 확실히 셀레늄과, 그리고 아마도 바나듐과 길항작용이 있는 듯하다.
무기요딘 (즉, 요드 형태)는 보통 소장에서 쉽게 흡수되지만 피부를 통해서도 흡수되며, 특히 피부 손상시 유입이 증가하게 된다.
일단 흡수된 요딘은 ECF에 빠르게 분포되고 타액으로 분비되고 장관내로 들어가며 거기에서 다시 재흡수된다. 요딘은 태반을 통과하고 유즙으로도 분비된다.
요딘은 마침내 대부분 요딘형태로 소변으로 배설된다. 극미량은 땀, 대변, 호기로 배출된다.
요딘 독성을 막는 여러가지 기전이 있다. -- 요딘 흡수 차단 및 갑상선호르몬 생산하는 기전등이 그것인데, 후자가 대부분이며, 과다한 요딘에 노출되었다 해서 모두 독성반응을 나타내는 것은 아니다.
@ 급성요딘독성증상 :
원인들 -- ingestion, or medical procedures such as wound irrigation, gastrointestinal disturbance (vomiting and diarrhea), metabolic acidosis, seizure, stupor, delirium and collapse 등이 그 원인들,
독성증상들 -- iodide mumps, iododerma and iodide fever ( iodine-containing drugs, or radiographic contrast media 사용시). 만성, 아임상성 독성도 있다.
@ 과다한 요딘/요드 복용 -- 갑상선저하(갑상선종 유무와 상관 없이) 유발, 갑상선암의 발생율 및 종류의 변화 유발. 대개 요딘 과용량 복용이나 요딘결핍증 치료시도 후 일어날 수 있다. 예를 들어 예전에 요딘 결핍으로 인한 갑상선저하였다가 요딘 공급에 따라 기능항진이 오는 경우가 있지만 그리 흔하지는 않다.
요딘의 발암가능성에 대한 자료는 아직까지는 없다. 동물에서는 요딘이 과다하든 부족하든 모두 발암원인으로 지목된다. 2년간 쥐에게 음료소에 과다한 용량의 KI를 주었을 때 갑상선이형성이 나타난 보고는 있다. 이것은 비유전적증식관련기전으로 보인다.

The Tincture is much used locally as a counterirritant, and an alterative application. Iodo-tannin is chiefly employed as an antiseptic and alterative application in local diseases. The preparations of Iodine are used with benefit in—
Catarrh and Hay Fever,—inhalations of Iodine or the Carbolate.
Inflammations,—Tincture of Iodine locally, to promote absorption.
Skin Diseases,—the Glycerite or Tincture, in chloasma, lentigo, lupus.
Chronic Diseases of the Spleen and Liver,— the Tincture or Ointment may be used locally for counter-irritation.
Glandular Tumors, hypertrophied tonsils, cervical cysts, etc.,—the Tincture or Compound Solution parenchymatously injected, is an efficient resolvent.
Empyema, Hydrocele, Ovarian Cysts, etc. ,—the Tincture injected undiluted, is one of the best applications to prevent return of the effusion.
Sores, Ulcers, Fissures, etc,—Iodoform, Iodo-tannin, or Iodized Starch, are highly recommended, as local antiseptics and alteratives.
Vomiting of Pregnancy,—drop doses of the tincture every hour, have often succeeded in very obstinate cases.

Tertiary Syphilis, and many of its results, as neuralgiae, paralysis from gummata, syphilitic ulcerations, syphiloma of the internal viscera, chronic rheumatism and sciatica of syphilitic origin, lupus of syphilitic or scrofulous origin,—are all best treated by Potassium Iodide.
Mercurial Poisoning, and other chronic metallic toxaemiae, —Potassium Iodide, to promote elimination of the poison.
Malaria,—the Ammonium Iodide with Arsenic, in chronic malaria.
Tonsillitis, and simple sore throat,—a weak solution of Potassium Iodide.
Chronic Bright's Disease,—the prolonged use of Potassium Iodide has seemed to retard the progress of the parenchymatous changes.

As a local application this agent and its substitutes have been extensively used in the treatment of epithelioma, chancre and chancroid, wounds, ulcers, sores, etc., and but for its offensive odor and the danger of its toxic action Iodoform would have been in unrestricted employment for all such conditions. Aristol and Europhen, if equally efficient, as is claimed, will doubtless replace it largely as a topical agent. Iodoform and Iodol are highly esteemed as internal remedies in—
Chronic Gastric Catarrh, and intestinal catarrh, ulceration of the gastrointestinal mucous membrane, etc., —Iodol given midway between meals.
Bronchitis, Bronchial Catarrh, and various respiratory neuroses,—Iodol has been found highly useful in many instances.
Tuberculosis,—has been successfully treated by Iodoform, which certainly does check the activity of the bacillus of that disease.
Diabetes,—has been apparently cured by Iodoform given internally.
Syphilis,—may be combated successfully by Iodoform or Iodol, in lieu of Potassium Iodide, in cases where the latter is indicated."

Summary
183. Iodine is a halogen. At room temperature it is a blue-black solid which sublimes into a gaseous form. Iodine is present in seaweed, igneous rocks and some soils.
184. In the diet, iodine is naturally present in marine fish, shell fish and sea salt. Levels in cereals and grains vary depending on the soil content. The food colour erythrosine is also rich in iodine. In the UK, iodine is also present in cows’ milk probably as a result of the use of supplemented cattle feeds and iodophors as sterilants. Iodine is present in food supplements both in its elemental from and as a component of kelp products. It is also present in licensed medicines, topical antiseptics and radiographic contrast agents.
185. In the UK, the mean adult intake of iodine from food is estimated to be 0.219 mcg/day. High level (97.5th percentile) intake in adults is estimated to be 0.434 mcg/day. On a body weight basis, iodine intakes in children are higher than those in adults as a result of the larger proportion of milk consumed. Iodine intake from water is estimated to be generally less than 30 mcg/day. The LRNI and RNI for iodine is 70 and 140 mcg/day respectively.
186. Iodine interacts with selenium and possibly vanadium. Natural goitrogens in the diet derived from plants such as cassava, maize, potato, cauliflower and broccoli as well as fluoride ions present in drinking water interfere with iodine metabolism.
187. Iodine is readily absorbed, largely from the small intestine. It can also be absorbed dermally, particularly when the skin is damaged. Once absorbed, iodine is distributed rapidly throughout the extracellular fluid. Iodine can be secreted into saliva or gastric juices and reabsorbed. It can cross the placenta and is secreted into human milk.
188. The thyroid gland is the only significant store of iodine. Uptake of iodine by the thyroid is determined by need, a process mediated by thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). It is then incorporated into thyroid hormones within a large protein, thyroglobulin; this protein is then stored in the colloid of the thyroid gland. : ***inc. TSH or Thyroglobulin - may suggest iodine deficient condition
189. Iodine is largely excreted in the urine with all circulating iodine being cleared regardless of the circulating concentrations. Very small amounts may be excreted in sweat and in faeces.
190. Thyroid hormones are involved in the maintenance of metabolic rate, cellular metabolism and cellular integrity. In the developing foetus and infant, thyroid hormones are necessary for the development of the nervous system. A variety of mechanisms exist to compensate for low levels of iodine intake. These include enlargement of the thyroid gland a condition known as goitre. Only when these mechanisms fail do the clinical signs of hypothyroidism (also known as myxoedema) become apparent. Symptoms include lethargy, weakness, weight gain, poor concentration, oedema, muscle ache, dry skin, delayed reflexes and slow cardiac rhythm. In pregnancy, iodine deficiency is associated with in an increased risk of miscarriage, still birth and congenital abnormalities. In the developing foetus, the major feature of deficiency is endemic cretinism, characterised by mental retardation, deaf mutism and spastic diplegia. A less common form of cretinism, due to hypothyroidism persisting post-natally, is the myxoedematous type, which is characterised by hypothyroidism and dwarfism.
191. As with iodine deficiency, a number of mechanisms exist to protect the thyroid against iodine excess. These include reduced iodide uptake by the thyroid, a switch towards the production of the iodine-richer hormones and reduced secretion of thyroid hormones. In humans, the effects of excess iodine can be divided into three types (though not all exposed subjects will react). These are 1) disturbance of thyroid function, resulting in the induction of hypothyroidism and/or goitre, or hyperthyroidism (thyrotoxicosis). These types of responses may occur where there is general high iodine intake or where intervention has taken place to correct iodine deficiency. The patterns of thyroid malignancy may also be altered. 2) Sensitivity reactions, such as iodide mumps, iododerma and iodide fever. These tend to occur following treatment with iodine-containing drugs, or radiographic contrast media. 3) Iodine poisoning. This may occur following accidental or deliberate ingestion, medical procedures such as wound irrigation.
192. In animals, symptoms of acute iodine toxicity include diarrhea, alternating periods of hyperactivity, weakness, prostration, convulsions and death. In subchronic toxicity studies, reduced weight gain and haemolysis have been reported in addition to specific effects on the thyroid. BB/W rats are susceptible to the development of lymphocytic thyroiditis and have been used to investigate the mechanism for this condition. No data have been identified on the carcinogenicity of iodine in laboratory animals per se, however, both iodine deficiency and excess can promote tumour formation is animals pre-treated with known carcinogens. Metaplasia has been identified in one chronic study. The available genotoxicity data are negative. Adverse effects on reproduction and development have been reported, but the data are sparse.
